Handwritten 1831 marriage certificate, 7 3/4" x 4 3/4". Written by clerk of the court William Crenshaw, one of the first settlers of Brownstown Township, the county seat of Jackson County, Indiana.

"I do certify that I lawfully joined Emanuel Mahes and Sarah Parker in the bands of Matrimony on the 1st day of May last given under my hand and seal this 28 day of July 1831. Hiram Kness, J.P. William Crenshaw, C.J.C." Crenshaw has signed on the verso for docketing. Reinforced at horizontal fold with archival tape. Wonderful early Americana and the first completely handwritten marriage certificate we've ever seen.
