American Labor leader Samuel Gompers; organized the American Federation of Labor (AFL). Typed letter signed, 1 page, June 8, 1921, on American Federation of Labor letterhead to Charles H. Betts, Editor, The Lyons Republican, Lyons, NY, sending a statement for inclusion in the paper's 100th anniversary edition: "To edit a publication which has reached its hundredth anniversary is no small honor and entails no small responsibility. No publication can have survived for that length of time without having contributed something to the common good, without having been of service to the common people. To have rendered a service that has been rewarded with such tenure of life must be a source of satisfaction: to measure up to the requirements of such a record must impose for the future a high obligation ..." Gompers has included a cover letter on letterhead which is signed as well. Two pieces signed. Items have normal folds, some additional wrinkling and one hole in the page of the statement, affecting nothing.
