Add to Cart:
A rather unusual and ironic carte-de-visite image of three children and a rather distinguished and dignified looking black man contentedly reading together with the inscription at the foot of the image “Lerning is Wealth,” with backstamp of Chas. Paxton of New York. Printed description on the verso indicates that the proceeds from the sale of the photo “will be devoted to the education of colored people in the department of the Gulf, now under the command of Maj. Gen. Banks…” Ironically the word “Learning” is misspelled on the front of the card. Some staining in the margins. Else good.
