Singer, songwriter, actress Vanessa Lynn Williams was born in Tarrytown, New York, on March 18, 1963. She made history by being the first African American woman to be crowned Miss America in 1984, only to have it end abruptly when a scandal erupted ten months into her reign. Williams had been photographed nude years earlier and had believed those photographs had been destroyed. They were offered to Playboy Magazine but publisher Hugh Hefner turned them down on the grounds that they were unauthorized and would be an enormous embarrassment to Williams. Penthouse Magazine published the photos, bringing the magazine a $14 million windfall.

The title subsequently went to first-runner up Suzette Charles, also African-American. Vanessa is quoted as saying "the best revenge is success." Williams secured a record deal and released her debut album, The Right Stuff in 1988. The album reached gold status in the U.S. and earned her three Grammy Award nominations, including one for best new artist.

Her second album, The Comfort Zone, became the biggest success in her music career, selling 2.2 million copies in the U.S. and has been certified three times platinum in the United States, gold in Canada and platinum in the United Kingdom. It won her five Grammy Award nominations.

Black and White promotional photograph of Williams autographed with Best Wishes. Excellent condition.
