Autograph letter signed by designer of America's flag

Robert Heft, who designed America's current flag, grew up in Lancaster, Ohio, where he created the flag as a school project in 1958. He was 17 at the time. He unstitched the blue field from a family 48-star flag, sewed in a new field, and used iron-on white fabric to add hand-cut stars. He originally received a B minus for the project. After discussing the grade with his teacher, the two agreed that if the design was accepted by Congress, the grade would be reconsidered. Heft's flag design was chosen and adopted by presidential proclamation after Alaska and before Hawaii was admitted into the union in 1959. His teacher kept his part of the agreement and changed his grade to an A. Responding to the question, "What was the greatest challenge you found designing the 50-star flag," Heft writes: "I had never sewn before sewing the flag and have not sewn since once in a lifetime was enough. I'm even ready for the 51st if needed." The letter is signed Bob Heft and dated 3-16-98." Normal folds. Excellent condition.
