Here is a fascinating and informative collection relating to a highly specialized business in turn of the century Massachusetts. Poultry was a major industry of the day and many, many people had flocks of chickens. Billing itself as "America's Greatest Poultry Farm," A.C. Hawkins Company was a leading dealer in poultry and eggs, located in Lancaster, MA. This archive consists primarily of original business correspondence directed to the company between 1890 and 1926. Letters mostly comprised of order requests on wonderful letterheads of notable businesses and professional individuals from all over New England, the Midwest, Southern and Western states. The letterheads look like a who's who of turn of the century businesses: The Minneapolis Elevator Company; S.N. Wolbach (dry goods); A.R. Johnston Physician and Druggist; D.A. Wiant (Watches, Clocks and Jewelry); Lichty & Guthrie (Hardware and Tinware); Office of J.H. Devins (Manufacturers of Fertilizers and Ground Bone for Lawns); T.A. Ray (Practical Wood Turner); Williman R. Cheves (Rough or Hammered Granite); Louisiana Institute for the Deaf and Dumb; and many more. Some letters express interest in receiving chicks and hatching eggs for show purposes. Very interesting letterheads.

Breeds and breeding practices are discussed. The archive includes 63 ALsS and TLs consisting of invoices and four original ALsS of personal correspondence and 10 miscellaneous items.

Here's a small sampling of the letters:

A letter from F.B. Dean, Cashier of Knight & Dean McLeod County Bank in Minnesota, to her brother contains a postscript to have "Julie breed for Ambrose Nicks and have that testicle taken out. She has no use for it."

A letter from the Cashier of Waterbury (Vermont) National Bank, dated Feb. 14, 1905: " I would like to have your best price on a trio for breeding for my use in getting a first class egg producing strain of Golden Buff Plymouth Rocks. What I want is some good birds that will breed true to color, but am not so particular as to prize winners, but a good all round bird will suit my purpose "

A letter from S.A. Howard Jr., March 23, 1902: "At what price can you ship me one White Rock Cockerel that has a good comb and is a good heavy bird. I want him for breeding. Also, 3 White Rock pullets that are now laying. I want good heavy birds I don't care for exhibition birds but good birds to breed from."

Very good condition.
