Union major general remembered for his gallant defense of the celebrated Hornets Nest at Shiloh. He was a direct descendant of one of the settlers who came over on the Mayflower. War-date autograph letter signed BM Prentiss, 1 page, 4to, Camp Defiance (Cairo, IL), June 17, [1861]. From his Headquarters of the 1st Brigade, IL Volunteers, Prentiss writes to Colonel Schittner requesting that arms seized from a prominent local landowner, Mr. Bird, be returned. "...Whilst I am pleased to find that you are on the look out and vigilant in performing your duty, I regret that this seizure was made until you had conversed with Mr. Bird...From the invoice I am disposed to believe that he had those articles for his defence as it is usual for Planters to be supplied with them to preserve order and keep down insurrection...If I am correct return the articles otherwise you can keep them at your encampment. Boldly penned and signed adding rank, "Brig. Genl." Fine example.
